Health and Safety

Health and safety isn't a box-ticking exercise , t's a legal duty. Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSWA), employers must do everything "reasonably practicable" to protect employees, contractors and the public from harm at work. That duty is backed by detailed regulations made under the Act including the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR), COSHH 2002, and CDM 2015 for construction all enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities.


Breaches are criminal offences. Courts can impose unlimited fines on organisations, and in serious cases, individuals, including directors and senior managers, can face imprisonment.
